“MY OLD DOG: Rescued Pets with Remarkable Second Acts”

    Author: Laura T. Coffey
    Photographer: Lori Fusaro
    Foreword by: Neko Case
Afterwords by: Dr. Marty Becker and Mikkel Becker

Genre: A non-fiction celebration of the happiest dogs on Earth and the people who saved them.

Book description: “No Dog Should Die Alone” was the attention-grabbing — and heart-stirring — headline of journalist Laura T. Coffey’s TODAY show website story about photographer Lori Fusaro’s work with senior shelter pets. While generally calm, easy, and already house-trained, these animals often represent the highest-risk population at shelters. With gorgeous, joyful photographs and sweet, funny, true tales of “old dogs learning new tricks,” Coffey and Fusaro show that adopting a senior can be even more rewarding than choosing a younger dog. You’ll meet endearing elders like Marnie, the irresistible shih tzu who has posed for selfies with Tina Fey, James Franco, and Betty White; Remy, a soulful nine-year-old dog adopted by elderly nuns; George Clooney’s cocker spaniel, Einstein; Susie, the funny little senior dog who got adopted by “Humans of New York” creator Brandon Stanton; and Bretagne, the last known surviving search dog from Ground Zero. They may be slower moving and a tad less exuberant than puppies, but these pooches prove that adopting a senior brings immeasurable joy, earnest devotion, and unconditional love.

    Published by: New World Library

Born To Love novella book cover

BORN TO LOVE: Keiki & Lia Thriller, a Lei Crime Kindle World Novella

    Available only on Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/Lei-Crime-Kindle-Novella-Thriller-ebook/dp/B01H2P5IJI/

Can the past unlock the future and love preserve a life?

A puppy’s job is to learn. Keiki relishes the sights, sounds and smells of her world, but people frustrate and confuse her. Why do humans control all the good stuff?

Lia Corazon channels her energy and emotions into the dogs she trains in her North Texas kennel. She especially enjoys four-month-old Keiki’s enthusiasm, but the pup’s owner makes her uneasy. There’s something very…wrong about him.

When a vicious storm, violent flood, and scary creatures menace Keiki, her Rottweiler bravery comes through. But what can a good-dog do when a human enemy threatens? Keiki must use all she’s learned if she’s to save Lia from a killer.

New to Amy Shojai? Read the first book in her “September Day” thriller series, LOST AND FOUND, for FREE. Text the word “thrills” to 44222 to get started.

    Q&A WITH THE AUTHOR

How does your story links to the Lei Crime Series?

The novella is a prequel to the Lei Crime Series. Set in Texas, the story begins about two years before Blood Orchids, offering readers the backstory of Keiki, the Rottweiler.

In BORN TO LOVE, readers get a glimpse of what shaped the young Keiki as a puppy, and learn about experiences and special training that helped her eventually become a police dog. She learns that even a good-dog–and her person, Lia–are not infallible, both need love, and together they are stronger than apart.

Lia and Keiki alternate viewpoint chapters in BORN TO LOVE, but Keiki does NOT talk, not in human terms anyway. Keiki communicates via body language, scent signals, and the occasional vocalization, in the same way that real dogs communicate. She does have thoughts–pure made-up fun speculation!

What major theme comes across the clearest in your story? Is this a theme found consistently in your other works?

I’m a certified animal behavior consultant for dogs and cats, so pet themes are the focus of both my nonfiction and fiction books. My September Day thriller series features a strong but damaged female protagonist and her canine service dog. Not only is Shadow a major character (he has his own viewpoint chapters, too), he’s saved her life many times over, and helped her heal emotionally. There are many other dog and cat characters in the series including a trained Maine Coon cat–and sometimes readers win contests to include THEIR pet in the story. Also, love is a major theme–not romance per se, but issues of trust, commitment, loss, betrayal, and the search for love and family. These also figure prominently in BORN TO LOVE.

Tell us a little about your main character. Why do you think readers will like her?

I’d already fallen for the adult Keiki in the Lei Crime Series. In BORN TO LOVE, Keiki embodies the typical four-month-old baby-dog attitude, full of wide-eyed wonder, curiosity, and non-stop energy. She’s not yet gained the confidence that comes with experience, though, and is overwhelmed by new or scary situations. Keiki also has to temper her independent nature to accept help–and receive love–from her person, Lia. I’ve fallen in love with them both, and can’t wait to write more Keiki and Lia adventures.
