Children's Books Categories
Children’s Book Audiences
You may notice some new terms in our children’s book categories. We have tried to align the titles and ages of the categories to industry age groupings. When deciding on a category in which to submit your work, here’s some guidelines to consider. Of course, there are guidelines, and there are exceptions to every rule (looking at you, Harry Potter!).
Middle Grades Snapshot
The middle grade reader is age 8-12. Often written in third person, these works generally do not include profanity, graphic violence, or sexuality. Romance might be limited to a crush or a first kiss. The protagonist is often the age of the target audience. Storylines revolve around friends and family, their immediate world and relationship to it.
Young Adult Snapshot
Young adult readers are 13-18. Work in this category may have some profanity, graphic violence, romance and sexuality. Books aimed at readers on the low end of the age range often have lead characters that are 14-15 years old and cleaner language and conflict. Work targeting older audiences (up to 18) may be edgier. These books, often written in first person, typically focus on how the protagonists develop an understanding of how they fit in the world beyond their friends and family.
Judging and Awards Information
- A panel of three judges scores each entry. Judges consist of DWAA members and non-members who are professional writers and editors. Judges’ scores determine the finalists and winners. Judges may enter the contest, but will not judge entries in categories they enter.
- Judges’ decisions are final. A list of judges will be posted October 31, 2024.
- Finalists will be announced January 10, 2025.
- Finalists in the regular and special categories receive certificates. Winners of regular categories receive the DWAA Maxwell Medallion, named in honor of the late Maxwell Riddle. Winners of special categories receive cash awards as listed.
