Flash fiction submission…only it’s not fiction!

Hi.  My name is Niko, and Mom and Dad and I lost our home. An earthquake split our house in half! I’m a miniature dachshund. I could have crawled through the tented floor inside but I didn’t. I’m a smart dog.

We had to move. Pet rentals are hard to find. We visited one, and I got the lease! The landlord wanted the smallest dog! Mom and Dad were very proud of me.

I know all about pet rentals. Nasty smells everywhere. The carpets are the worst. I don’t even bother marking them. I can’t overpower these old pee smells, but I marked every tree outside. I’m a good dog and I know my duties.

Mom wanted a new throw rug. What color would it be? I can only see black, white, yellow and blue. Mom’s pup surprised us with “textured wool.”  I think that means a bumpy carpet.

When they unrolled it, I didn’t smell any pee! Time to start marking so everyone knows this house is ours. And the best part? I could see the color!

I’d better get to work for Mom and Dad.  Time to pee on our new white rug.
