Harvey looked fondly at Naomi, finally asleep. The breakup was rough. His human was safer now. His tail thumped on the bed softly as Bella walked back into the room. Her beautiful tawny fur was standing up near her ruff.
“He’s out there again. He has a ladder on the back of the house. What do we do?”
Harvey sighed and lifted himself off the bed.
“I’ll handle it. Guard her.”
Down the stairs and through the large dog door he went. He knew Naomi thought she had locked it, but he nudged it open with his nose. This was the third time Nick was back, violating the protection order. Harvey would make sure it was the last. Nick hadn’t breached the fence before today.
Softly Harvey crept around the side of the house. The ladder was there. The window was locked but glass was glass. He eyed the ladder to determine the best place to aim. The nearby arbor with its pointy ironwork would be perfect for his plan. It only took seconds to blast the ladder off balance.
Naomi woke up with a start as Harvey came back in.
“I heard something.”
Harvey and Bella snuggled her and she fell back asleep.
