By Dr. Rascal, as told to Madeline Male
Whether you’re a seasoned champion at snagging the treat bag or a puppy aspiring to take matters into your own paws, this advice is for you. It’s scientifically backed by my years of my research. So read on to learn my tried-and-true top five ways to receive more treats from your humans.
1 - Puppy Eyes
We have to start with the classic: puppy eyes. Many even claim that it “works every time,” especially when paired with the good ole head-on-the-lap. While the success rate might be a bit overstated, this technique is still a smart first line of attack for getting more treats.
2 - Double Treating
You might’ve heard of “trick-or-treating,” but have you heard of “double treating”? This technique might take some time to master, but the payoff is immense. First, get as many treats as you can from the first human. Then, find another human who is unaware you just
got a delicious snack. Chances are, they’ll repeat what the first human did—and you’ll get double the treats, thanks to your strategically intelligent mind.
3 - The Last Crumbs
When a treat bag is “empty,” humans tend to guard it less. Jump at this opportunity—literally. It’s silly that humans don’t know how glorious the last crumbs can be . . . and once you’ve got the bag, they probably won’t get it back for while.
4 - Sit for Treat
Eventually, as we grow out of our puppy days, humans tend to forget to give us treats every time we perform a command. If this sounds like your situation, it’s time to give your people a “friendly reminder.” Come in swinging by only listening if you know there are treats around.
5 - Treat Inflation (aka “treatflation”)
In the human world, you’ve probably heard that prices have been rising. They call this “inflation.” There’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to practice this trick as well. So at your next training session, implement “treatflation”: increasing the number of treats that you charge to sit, stay, and come.
To wrap up, there are a variety of levers you can pull in order to receive more treats from your humans. These are just a few of my best scientifically proven strategies. Most dogs find success by customizing the strategies to their specific household.
Happy treat-munching!
